The radiating Persian Gabbeh displayed in WINDOW LEFT measures 8.6 x 11.  It was hand-knotted in southwest Iran by Kashkuli women, using handspun, vegetally dyed natural wool from their own sheep.

 The word Gabbeh comes from the Persian meaning; raw, natural and uncut.  Gabbehs are noted for their basic and primitive design, which often incorporate the rectangle.  The artist’s design includes stripes of varying shades of  red (brick, crimson, wine, auburn, etc.). Some of these stripes have a sprinkling of tan confetti.   Others stripes include a wide band of open ended rectangles.  The artist’s clever employment of the rectangle produces a radiating energy.  As a result, this really “cool” Gabbeh sizzles!

The fresh as spring Bakshayesh in WINDOW RIGHT measures 8.9 x 11.4.  This charming piece was woven in northern Afghanistan by Turkmen women using handspun vegetally dyed local wool and given an antique finish.

The artist’s design reflects a rich history, which effortlessly bursts into the present with life, energy and a quiet order.  The Bakshayesh employs a simple palette of yellow, blue, ivory and brown in a sophisticated fashion creating a piece that draws your eye to its symmetry, subtlety and beauty.  The use of shadows draws you in for a closer look to examine all the intricate and lovely details.

The twin guard borders surrounding the main border incorporate a simple leaf pattern and a charming flower chain. The main border utilizes the same elements as its surrounding guard borders, but on a larger scale creating an orderly and peaceful effect.

The tree design in the main field built upon a lovely sky blue backdrop is magnificent!  Cone-shaped Cyprus trees representing immortality and pear trees representing abundance are set between the bent willow branches, which appear as fences.  The willow represents meditation or prayer.   Throughout the field are floral elements portraying the paradise to come.
