#35776 – “Antique” Chinoiserie – 10 x 11.9 – Afghanistan

The graceful “Antique” Chinoiserie displayed in the left hand window measures 10 x 11.9.  This design is inspired by an original antique Chinoiserie textile from China.  Chinoiserie is a French term signifying “Chinese-esque” and is characterized by the use of fanciful imagery of China incorporating asymmetry, playful design and intricate patterns.

This recreation was hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan by ethnic Turkmen women using handspun vegetally dyed mountain sheep wool and handspun natural silk from Samarkand.

The shimmering silk pattern on the naturally dyed blue-green wool field gives the appearance of floral vines flowing gently across a tranquil stream.  The soft colors and the graceful movement generate a beauty that produces a calming effect.

This “Antique” Chinosierie may appear delicate, but the carpet is quite durable!

WINDOW RIGHT

Fine Kazahk

#36799 – Fine Kazakh – 9 x 12.2 – Afghanistan

Displayed in the right hand window is a bold and primitive Fine Kazakh measuring 9 x 12.2.  It was hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan by Hazara women using handspun vegetally dyed Ghazni wool.

15 years ago John Kebabian supplied Afghan rug makers with many colorful antique  Caucasian rug designs.  These weavers  have done a phenomenal job recreating the rugs and carpets.  Their use of color and design is unsurpassed.

This stunning piece has an overall design of latch-hook medallions interspersed with stylized floral elements.  The strong pattern set on an ivory field solidly anchors a room in a striking fashion.

This is a Masterpiece, “as good as it gets” in the genre of Caucasian style carpets.
