Antique Sarouk Handwoven Rug

Hand-knotted in Persia around the 1920s, this exquisite antique Sarouk rug is a testament to the masterful artistry of Persian weaving. Sarouk rugs are renowned for their exceptional quality, a result of their high-density knots and the unique, durable wool from the region, which creates a rich, velvety pile. This particular piece showcases the classic Sarouk design, featuring a central field adorned with a dense, all-over floral pattern known as the mir design, often called a “garden of paradise.” The deep, saturated red dye of the field is a hallmark of Sarouk rugs, as is the intricate border with its delicate floral motifs. Unlike many other Persian rugs that relied on a central medallion, Sarouks like this one are celebrated for their sophisticated and timeless repeating patterns, making them a cornerstone of traditional and classic decor.
