Antique Kazak Handwoven Rug

Hand knotted in the late 19th / early 20th century in a village in the Southwest Caucasus, probably by an Armenian woman. This piece would have been woven on a horizontal nomadic loom using the Ghiordes (Turkish/symmetric) knot with wool pile (knots) on a wool foundation (warps and wefts). The word, ‘Kazak’ means ‘rough-rider’ and describes a race of restless, roaming, troublesome people. This rug features bold geometric patterns, including a prominent blue central rectangle adorned with intricate star-like shapes and arrow-like symbols. The rich color palette of red, blue, white, and green is complemented by a layered border of geometric patterns in yellow, blue, and red, showcasing the meticulous artistry of the weavers.

The rug is in excellent condition for its age.
