Antique Persian Malayer Handwoven Rug
$2,500.00
This antique Malayer rug, hand-knotted in Northwest Persia around 1920, is a wonderful balance of village charm and formal structure. Malayer weavings are unique because they occupy a stylistic middle ground: they feature the spontaneous, geometric motifs of tribal nomadic rugs but are executed with a technical precision and fine weave usually reserved for city workshop carpets. This piece displays a deep midnight blue field populated by a rhythmic, all-over pattern of stylized floral medallions, framed by beige corner spandrels that provide a clean, high-contrast aesthetic. Because Malayer weavers typically worked from memory rather than a rigid blueprint, the rug possesses a distinct, non-repetitive character that makes it an authentic piece of Persian village art while remaining sophisticated enough for traditional interiors.
The rug is in good condition. Structurally it has no issues whatsoever, but there are some areas of low pile (see photos). It has decades of life left in it.
PANTONE shades: We do our best to find the closest match to one or multiple colors in the rug. The shade card we choose may not always be the perfect one, but we do our best (it’s a lot of work)! At times we may show multiple shade cards so you can get a better sense of color. Finally, when photographing rugs from the same group (shipment, collection, SKU, etc.) we will often use one or two shade card(s) so that you can get a good sense of the coloration. Hope you enjoy viewing our beautiful rugs!
